Cloud-computing is a term that is generally used to describe a shared IT infrastructure containing virtualized resources. These resources are enabled remotely - such as web services, they are accessed over the internet (over public IP) and communicate via application programming interfaces (api). These resources are not maintained internally but are rented from third parties and typically are a pay-as-use utility model (some compare it to getting energy from a power company). The term "cloud" specifically refers to networks of servers, databases and applications that are virtualized (behind or in the "cloud") so that the end user doesn't necessarily know or need to know what it is but just only deal with the API layer or the user interface (such as a web browser) for accessing what they need. An example is Zumo Drive which allows you to store files that can be accessed via a virtual "drive" on your computer or via their website.
